Kazakhstan is traditionally one of the most important trading partners for Ukraine, economic development and trade minister of Ukraine Ihor Prasolov said during the meeting of the Joint Ukrainian-Kazakh intergovernmental commission on economic cooperation, ForUm correspondent reports.

According to the minister, this country has the third highest volume of trade with Ukraine among the CIS members and the eighth among all of our trading partners. "In 2012, trade between the two countries increased by 11.9% to $ 4.18 billion, including export - $ 2.643 billion (31% increase). Basis of Ukrainian exports to Kazakhstan is engineering production - 45.1%, metallurgy production - 20.1%, foodstuffs - 14.1%, chemical industry production - 6.2%. In turn, the Kazakh producers supply to our country fuel and energy complex commodities (82.1% of total imports) and metallurgy production (8.1%)," the official said.

He clarified that the parties have agreed to take joint measures for further enhancing bilateral trade, as well as signing of the Ukraine-Kazakhstan Action Plan for 2013-14 called "Road Map 4". The fuel and energy complex, agriculture, agricultural engineering, infrastructure facilities, transportation, aviation and space are determined priorities for mutually beneficial cooperation. Moreover, the parties will exchange proposals to improve the trade and investment before the end of 2013.

In addition, Prasolov said that recently the delegation of the Ukrmashbud Ukrainian Machine Building Association visited Kazakhstan with an objective to promote Ukrainian technique and equipment in the Kazakh market and deepen cooperative relations by creating different joint ventures. "In addition, in 2012, the representatives of the “Yaderne palyvo” Ukrainian nuclear fuel state concern hold meetings and consultations with the Kazatomprom Kazakh state-owned nuclear holding company on cooperation in the nuclear industry. A bilateral group was set up in order to develop new technologies for the extraction of uranium," the economic development and trade minister of Ukraine said.

He added that the Bratslav-KZ joint venture created along with the Kazahselmash Kazakh Agricultural Corporation successfully completed the modernization of 11 dairy farms in Kazakhstan in 2011-12. "In the last year in Kazakhstan five offices of famous Ukrainian engineering companies were opened," the minister stressed.

However, he stressed concern of Kyiv about Kazakh protective measures against confectionery products from Ukraine, as well as extension of the agreement on supply of certain types of steel pipes in the countries of the Customs Union. "We have agreed to consult on these issues in the II quarter, and I hope that we will find a mutually beneficial solution," Prasolov concluded.
