Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych urges to intensify training for civil defense to minimize the effects of emergencies, the head of state said at a meeting of the National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine (NSDCU) today.

Yanukovych noted that the agenda of today's meeting includes the issue on strengthening of interaction between rescuers and military personnel in the prevention and elimination of emergency situations. According to him, the main purpose is to create an effective "state administration to overcome the consequences of natural disasters, industrial accidents and catastrophes."

Yanukovych stressed that every year the technogenic global situation deteriorates, and therefore, there is a need to establish a quality system that could respond to technogenic disasters.

In his opinion, the combining of functions of the Defense Ministry and State Emergency Service creates conditions to increase protection capacity and rescue of citizens.

The head of state noted that the situation with heavy snowfall demonstrated that such step was justified.

Yanukovych thanked the servicemen who helped citizens during the bad weather.

"During the performance of these duties it is also necessary to conduct trainings, which are provided by the civil defense system," the President said.
