67 thousand tons of seeds were imported in Ukraine in 2012, CEO of the Seed Association of Ukraine Valeriy Khadzhimatov told a round table, ForUm correspondent reports.
"Corn, sunflower, sugar beet are a high-tech cultures in terms of seed production, but they are produced abroad," he said.
Khadzhimatov said that according to statistics, 45% of seeds in the world are produced by five companies, which are present on the Ukrainian market as well. In recent years, according to him, Ukraine has also taken a number of measures to increase the export of local seeds abroad.
"Ukraine has joined the international certification schemes. We have conducted considerable work for the European Parliament to recognize certification schemes of Ukrainian seeds. If this is done, the seeds produced in Ukraine and audited by our inspection, will be sold in the European and the global markets. This is a serious step, which requires a significant investment," the CEO of the Seed Association of Ukraine concluded.
