The Ukrainian government keeps a tight control over preparations for floods and ice clearance, the press service of vice Prime Minister Oleksandr Vilkul informs.

Thus, the Interdepartmental operational headquarters for coordination of central and local executive authorities was set up in early February 2013 and headed by vice Prime Minister Vilkul.

"All the necessary measures should be applied to ensure the safety of the public and, if necessary, to carry out timely rescue operations," Vilkul said.

He noted that the interagency task forces were formed and distributed among regions of rapid response on the instructions of the headquarters, totaling more than 42 thousand military personnel, more than 5.000 units of the basic technique, 830 units to overcome water obstacles.

The plan of floods and ice clearance was worked out for the organization of the implementation of measures to address threats and improve the effectiveness of forces and means of the central and local governments.

The plan provides for the creation of nine regions of rapid response, each of which has defining characteristics of flood formation, opening and clearance of ice across water river basins.

"All the activities, identified by the headquarter, are carried out within personal responsibility of the heads of relevant central and local authorities," Vilkul said.
