Today, the traffic on Ukrainian roads is much larger than it was at the time, when they were designed, vice Prime Minister Oleksandr Vilkul said in interview.

"There are about 170 thousand kilometers of roads in the state. 95% of them were built 40-60 years ago and were designed for a different load. Today, the traffic on these roads from two to ten times more than what it was when they were designed," he said.

In his opinion, to construct a modern road network, a clear focus of responsibility for each road is needed.

"It should be clearly understood that the roads between the settlements are the responsibility of the Ukravtodor State Road Agency. The roads in the settlements, under the current legislation, are the responsibility of the local authorities," vice Prime Minister added.

Vilkul stressed that key roads should remain under the state control, and the rest along with the means to maintain them should pass under the control of the local government.
