For one hundred days upon the introduction of the new Code of Criminal Procedure in Ukraine, 500 people have been put under house arrest, nobody has been arrested on the proposal of the tax authorities, less persons stay in detention centers, head of the presidential administration's judicial system department Andriy Portnov, said in a live TV political talk show on Friday.
"In 2011, about 3.5 thousand people monthly were taken to Ukraine's detention centers. After the first part of the humanization of legislation, in 2012, a thousand people less were received in pre-trial detention centers, and for the three months since the introduction of the new Criminal Procedure Code, the figure has dropped to 700-800. This is almost three times less than in 2012, and five times less than in 2011," Andriy Portnov said.
He recalled that in Ukraine there are 33 pretrial detention centers, in which persons are suspected of committing crimes are detained.
"Not a single person has been arrested of tax crimes in Ukraine," Portnov added.
He also informed for 100 days the new Code of Criminal Procedure has been effective, 500 house arrests have been registered.
“In Ukraine, for the past three months, 500 house arrests have been registered. This is a new measure of restraint, which is actively being used on the territory of Ukraine,” head of the presidential administration's judicial system department noted.
Portnov also assured: “Crime rate for 3.5 months has not grown”.
As for searches, their number has dropped almost in half, as now they are carried out exclusively with proper authorization, the official added.
