Kyiv underground handed Kriukovsky carriage works first five cars to conduct their complex modernization under the Kyoto Protocol, ForUm correspondent reports.

"The implementation of large-scale project, providing for modernization of 95 subway cars, starts," chairman of the Kyiv City State Administration Oleksandr Popov said during the ceremony.

According to him, the modernization of the rolling stock will allow reducing energy consumption by 40%, reducing CO2 emissions, saving on repair and maintenance of cars and will extend the life of cars for 20 years.

Popov said that the cars running on Svyatoshinsko-Brovarskf line will be modernized, as 90% of cars at this line are technically obsolete. "During their operation since 1971, each of these cars has carried all the Ukrainian population (43-45 million people)," he said.

It should be noted that the modernization project is designed for 20 months. In November-December 2013, another 10 cars will be given for the reconstruction. Since January 2014, Kriukovsky carriage works will get 10 cars every month. 95 units of rolling stock are planned to be modernized before October 2014.
