The text of the EU-Ukraine Association Agreement could be forwarded to the EU Council in early spring this year, European Commissioner for Enlargement and European Neighborhood Policy Stefan Fule hopes.
“The European Commission is working on the text. I expect that it could be sent to the Council in early spring along with a relevant inquiry and recommendations,” he said at a European Parliament plenary session in Strasbourg on Wednesday.
Fule once again highlighted the importance of the document, saying that “it does not only concern a free trade area and is not only a geostrategic agreement”.
“As concerns Ukraine, this agreement is not only about political association but is also about economic integration, which would bring Ukraine closer to the EU and make Ukraine gradually integrated with the EU market”, European Commissioner explained.
The EU - Ukraine Association Agreement was initialed by the parties in 2012. Technical verification of the draft has been already completed. Now the parties prepare its official translation into the Ukrainian language and all the languages of the EU Member States, then the document is to be signed and ratified.
Kyiv expects to sign the Association Agreement with the EU, including creation of free trade area, at the Eastern Partnership Summit in November 2013 in Vilnius.
