The Government intends to renew the irrigation system by 2015, by allocating $ 2 billion under state guarantees, Prime Minister Mykola Azarov said during the Cabinet’s meeting, ForUm correspondent reports.

"In recent years there has been a strong tendency of increase in average temperatures in Ukraine, particularly in the south. According to preliminary forecasts of meteorologists, summer 2013 will also be hot. In fact, grain production gradually moves north. Therefore, we need to restore the irrigation system in the south not to lose bread production there," Azarov explained.

According to him, the state program of economy development provides for allocating $ 2 billion under state guarantees for renewal and modernization of the irrigation system in the south of Ukraine.

The Prime Minister said that the existing irrigation system was abandoned and virtually destroyed in the last decade.

"The government-approved state program of economy development for 2013 - 2014 provides for the irrigation resumption on one million hectares in Kherson and Mykolaiv regions and in Crimea over the next two years. Today, only 400 hectares are irrigated, so the total area of the irrigated land in 2015 should make up 1.4 million hectares. Due to this, gross agricultural production in the south could increase by $ 27 billion a year," Azarov estimated.
