In Ukraine, about 10 thousand children and 60 thousand adults have sight disabilities, 45 thousand people are blind, chief ophthalmologist of the Healthcare Ministry of Ukraine Serhiy Rykov told a briefing, ForUm correspondent reports.

According to him, myopia is found in 350 thousand children annually in Ukraine. "Myopia can be achieved in school or determined genetically," the doctor said.
"School myopia worries us less, as it is not progressing very quickly and stops at 3 diopters. Genetic myopia may cause progressive myopia by 8 years old.

The chief children's ophthalmologist Yuri Barinov said that the main reasons for vision problems of children are hereditary factor and prematurity.

"Every year 800-900 children are born with retinopathy in Ukraine. If it progresses, it is necessary to carry out laser surgery," the expert said.

According to him, only three ophthalmologic centers make such operations in Ukraine - in Kharkiv, Odesa and Kyiv. "These centers carry out approximately 350 operations per year," the chief ophthalmologist said.

Meanwhile Barinov noted that, according to the Health Ministry, 80% of cases of children’s blindness can be prevented and even cured. He urged parents to detect possible visual defects of children in time.
