449 new kindergartens appeared in Ukraine in 2012, Prime Minister Mykola Azarov said, opening the government’s meeting on Wednesday, ForUm correspondent reports.

"In 2012, the network of kindergartens increased by 449 institutions and today makes up almost 16.5 thousand of pre-school education establishments of different types and forms of ownership. They are attended by 85% of the total number of children aged 3 to 6 years. Quite a bit is left to ensure one hundred percent providing children with kindergarten seats," the Prime Minister said.

In his opinion, this is a big social change. "In two years we will be able to finally solve the problem of the availability of kindergartens seats even in regions, where the situation is still quite tense," Azarov stressed.

He also recalled that, pursuant to the decision of the Cabinet of Ministers of August 15, 2012, the local government authorities had to develop plans for the return of buildings to preschool education institutions, which are used for other purposes.

"I instruct the Education and Science Ministry and the Regional Development, Construction and Housing Ministry to review the implementation of this decision. We need to get all the information about the number of kindergartens to be returned, and have a schedule of their commissioning. Then we must compile a schedule of construction and reconstruction of kindergartens to implement the tasks, given by the Head of State," Azarov summed up.
