Ukraine is one of the leaders in the legitimate use of stem cells, M.D., director of the Coordinating Center for Transplantation of Organs, Tissues and Cells of the Healthcare Ministry of Ukraine Ruslan Saliutin told a press conference on the achievements of Ukrainian scientists in field of stem cells administration, ForUm correspondent reports.

"We have every right to claim the promising use of the cell-tissue grafts under the effective legal framework," he said, adding that actually Ukraine is the only former Soviet Union country, which has legislation on these biotechnologies.

The specialist noted that the Health Ministry of Ukraine officially approved methods of treatment of pancreatic necrosis, critical limb ischemia, trauma and burns with stem cells.

In turn, M.D. Andriy Popandopulo said that treatment with stem cells is not a panacea, but a specific kind of treatment, to which there are indications and contraindications. "This method should be used only by specialists," he said.

According to the doctor, patients with burns of over 90% of skin can be treated in Ukraine.

M.D., chief medical officer of the Cellular Therapy Institute Yuri Gladkikh informed of a method of treatment of pancreatic necrosis with stem cells from umbilical cord blood.

In his view, the Ukrainians have to understand the need for a cord blood bank. "We need to convey the need for collecting cord blood to every young family," he said and added that this would allow not only saving the baby's umbilical cord blood and using it in the future in case of treatment, but would allow storing the code of the nation.

The participants of the press conference reported that Ukraine will continue conducting clinical trials of stem cell treatment. Specialists are also hoping to grow human organs with the help of this technology.
