The Ukrainian Foreign Ministry is taking steps to improve the existing monitoring mechanism over adopted Ukrainian children living abroad, FM spokesman Yevhen Perebyinis told a briefing, ForUm correspondent reported.

He stressed that the foster father who killed Andrew Butler adopted in Ukraine was convicted and is serving his sentence. "According to the Ukrainian Embassy in the U.S., the adopter was convicted and is serving his sentence. I want to stress that the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry welcomes the reaction of the American side in this issue," Perebyinis said.

He noted that currently the FM provides access of the Ukrainian diplomats to two other adopted children by the same family in order to check their living conditions.

Answering a question whether Ukraine is going to use Russia’s way to limit the adoption of Ukrainian children by foreigners, Perebyinis stated: "As of today, we are guided by the law that we have. It allows foreigners to adopt Ukrainian children. It is obviously today that the monitoring system needs to be improved, and the Foreign Ministry is working on this now."
