European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso said that the forthcoming EU-Ukraine summit will be used to restore the parties' obligations within agenda of political association and economic integration.

"Ukraine is an important partner for us. Our common objective is political association and economic integration of Ukraine into the EU. The plan for the further development of our relations, the Association Agreement and deep comprehensive free trade area, is front of us, and the criteria for signing are clearly defined. Decisive actions and specific reforms in Ukraine, which will consolidate the Association Agreement, are needed. We use the summit to renew our commitment to this agenda," he said.

In turn, European Council President Herman Van Rompuy considers that “the parties have a historic opportunity to make a breakthrough in EU-Ukraine relations through the possible signing in November of the Association Agreement”.

He also said that the signature would only happen if Ukraine now “seizes the opportunity by taking determined action and making tangible progress on the three areas of EU concern”.

Herman Van Rompuy reminded that these areas are follow up to electoral shortcomings, addressing the issue of selective justice and progressing on general reform agenda.

"The core part of the summit will be focused on the necessary steps to create the right political circumstances and I hope that the summit will confirm an unequivocal commitment to them," European Council President said.
