The issue of social protection is a key issue for Ukraine, Prime Minister Mykola Azarov said opening the Cabinet’s meeting, ForUm correspondent reports.
"Today, Ukraine marks the Day of Social Justice for the second time. This holiday was established by Presidential Decree of November 4, 2011. Unfortunately, there is not justice in all spheres of our life. This is a very serious problem in our society, which is undergoing a long and difficult socio-economic transformation. It gives rise to social tensions," he said.
"I am far from idealistic views or embellishment of reality. Even in developed countries, which the Ukrainian politicians like to refer to, are still very, very far away from justice," Azarov said.
However, according to him, the duty of power is to restore social justice step by step
"I want to remind you that the restoration of social justice was in fact the first step of the government in April 2010. We have increased the cost of living, minimum wages, pensions and all kinds of social assistance, etc., which had been frozen earlier for two years. The people were repaid debts. Since May pensioner, who had a minimum pension, got 133 UAH more than earlier. In 2010, the basic social standards increased by about 245 hryvnia per month," the Prime Minister said.
According to him, the new social policy, initiated by the President of Ukraine, has strengthened the ideology of social justice.
"I will cite one example. In 2012, about 9 million pensioners received labor pension, accrued taking into account the average wage of 2006. I recall that in 2006 the average salary in the country was 929 UAH. Therefore life required to begin a phased modernization. That is, a fair increase in pensions along with increase in average wages. Since May 1, a new indicator started to use for pensions fixed until 2008. That is the basis for calculating pensions rose immediately by 270 hryvnia," he noted.
This step, according to Azarov, has led to fundamental changes in the structure of pension payment.
