Radical reform of the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) will be achieved through the optimization of its structure, chairman of the Security Service Oleksandr Yakymenko stated this during a board meeting, Ukrinform reports.

"A fundamental reform of the Security Service of Ukraine, taking into account changes in the law, will be achieved by optimizing the structure of the service, staff arrangement of its organs and bodies," Yakymenko said.

He expressed the need to strengthen the counterintelligence component in the activities of intelligence agencies to provide "adequate counteraction to the internal and external threats to national security."

Yakymenko emphasized that he would demand strict compliance with the law and the constitutional rights of citizens in the course of investigative activities. He reminded managers at all levels of their personal responsibility for the professional development of employees, creating an atmosphere of intolerance to violations of military discipline among the teams.

The board summarized the results of operational activity of the department in 2012, and identified its priorities for 2013.
