Former Prime Minister of Tajikistan Abdumalik Abdullojonov has been detained at Boryspil airport in Ukraine on an international arrest warrant.

An official of the international police agency Interpol in Ukraine confirmed to RFE/RL’s Tajik Service that Abdullojonov was detained on February 5 after arriving from the United States.

Abdullojonov, who challenged veteran Tajik President Emomali Rahmon in the 1994 presidential election, is accused by Tajik authorities of involvement in a 1996 assassination attempt on Rahmon.

He is also accused of backing a 1998 militant attack in Sughd Province and of organized crime and terrorism-related offenses.

For the last decade, he has lived in the United States.

In an interview in November with RFE/RL’s Tajik Service, Abdullojonov claimed to have won the 1994 election and accused Rahmon of fraud.
