Lithuanian vice-minister of foreign affairs Vytautas Leškevičius urges EU leaders to give Ukraine a clear signal to sign the Association Agreement, including free trade area.

"The free trade area will create sustainable economic benefits, both for the EU and Ukraine. So as we approach the Eastern Partnership summit in Vilnius in November, Ukraine must make us sure that the country is making progress. In turn, the EU should speak not only of the Association Agreement, but should also begin to implement FTA ratification," Leškevičius said on the eve of the European Council meeting, to be held on February 7-8 in Brussels.

Leškevičius stressed that during the FTA negotiations, the EU has to guarantee that the opening of markets will be of equal benefit to all EU member states and to different sectors of the economy.

Lithuania will hold the Presidency of the Council of the European Union in the second half of 2013..
