Ukraine hopes for closer cooperation with the Venice Commission at each stage of the constitutional process, President of Ukraine Viktor Yanukovych said at the meeting with President of the European Commission for Democracy through Law (the Venice Commission) Gianni Buquicchio.

According to Yanukovych, the amended Constitution of Ukraine should be focused on the assertion of a man as the highest value of the society and the state.

According to the President, the priority of work of the Constitutional Assembly will be strengthening the constitutional guarantees of human and civil rights, including effective and independent judicial protection of rights and freedoms.

Yanukovych said that the Constitutional Assembly membership, established in May 2012, did not include representatives of the opposition forces. "At every given opportunity I invite representatives of the opposition to participate in work of the Assembly," he said.

President of Ukraine stressed that pursuant to recommendations of the Venice Commission, the Constitutional Assembly functions as a separate and independent body.
