More than 17 thousand orphans and children deprived of parental care were adopted in 2012, presidential envoy on children's rights Yuri Pavlenko said during the opening of the family day care home of Buchma family in Mostisky district of Lviv region.

According to Pavlenko, last year the citizens of Ukraine adopted 2016 children, while foster parents adopted about 11 thousand children, and about one thousand and a half children were returned to their biological families.

"It's almost twice as many than in 2011 (1388). Foreign nationals adopted 803 children last year," Pavlenko added.

He noted that 2407 children were taken to foster families and family day care homes, it is the largest number since the years of independence. 

In general, according to Pavlenko, almost 80% of children (76 thousand) out of 95.956 orphans and children deprived of parental care are brought up in families, other 15% (15 thousand) are brought up in foster homes, and almost 5% (5 thousand) receive professional training.
