Ukraine has the right to defend its interests in connection with $7 billion bill for failing to import an agreed amount of gas, head of EU delegation to Ukraine Jan Tombinski said in exclusive commentary to ForUm correspondent.

"Ukraine, as each country, has to protect its interests. I have no information about what made Gazprom to bill $ 7 billion for failing to import gas, but everyone had seen the tariff, provided for in the contract. However, every economic entity always protects its rights. I think that the Ukrainian side also has arguments not to pay that bill," he said.

At the same time, the EU ambassador stressed that this is the subject of conversation between Ukraine and Russia, between the economic entities in particular. He added that it’s not in his competence to assess the decision: whether Ukraine should pay or not.

"It is not in my competence to comment on such interests," he said.
