Ukraine's population has fallen by 6.5 million people since the 90's, sociologist Yevhen Kopatko said during Moscow - Kyiv - Chisinau teleconference "Demographic problems of Russia and CIS countries and their ways of solving," ForUm correspondent reports.

"In the early 90s our population amounted to 52 million, now it is only 45.6 million. The tendency of population reduction, which is now observed, will not be overcome till 2020. This is ademographic hole, which appeared after the 90s," the expert said.

In his opinion, the migratory flows played an important role. "About 3.4 million people have left Ukraine, and these are huge losses. About 2 million work in the Russian Federation," the sociologist added.

He also noted that the ecological problem is urgent for the eastern part of Ukraine.

According to Kopatko, Donetsk region has lost one million people due to the poor ecology.
