Ambassador of Ukraine to the EU Kostyantyn Eliseev said that 2013 will be the decisive year for the bilateral relations.

"Not every year we had a chance to sign the Association Agreement. As a former head of the negotiating team, I could say that it is quite possible to do in 2013. Ukraine is on the closest distance to the signing of this momentous document," Eliseev explained.

He also expressed confidence that Ukraine should not miss this chance, as, according to him, this step is expected by the Ukrainian citizens, all politicians, diplomats and experts, who have spent many years of their work on the preparation of the Association Agreement.
"There are many such people, including foreign ministers, who contributed to the preparation of the Agreement. This document, in my opinion, can consolidate Ukrainian society and Ukrainian politicians and will encourage the reform process," the Ukrainian ambassador said.

He added that Ukraine and the EU have been negotiating on signing the Association Agreement since 2005.

"In 2005, the Mission to the EU worked out a set of arguments, both political-legal and practical, based on the content of the effective Agreement on Partnership and Cooperation. Our European partners had convinced us that that agreement was outdated and needed to be replaced with a new, more progressive document. Thus, the process of preparation of the Association Agreement has begun," Eliseev said.
