The United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) urged Russia not to abandon the practice of children adoption by foreigners, Agence France-Pressev reported on Wednesday.
"We urge the authorities to develop a reasonable plan of the national social protection, promoting the strengthening of Russian families," the executive director of UNICEF Anthony Lake said.
According to Lake, the welfare of children is a top priority, and political speculations around this issue are unacceptable.
His statement was issued after the upper house of the Russian Parliament approved a law prohibiting citizens of the United States of America to adopt Russian children. Previously, this document was approved by the lower house of the Russian Parliament.
