Opening the Council of Regions meeting, Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych said that the year 2012 has been very challenging for Ukraine.

He noted that this year for Ukraine can be compared to reaching the age of majority.
Yanukovych urged the meeting participants to analyze the results of work in 2012 and start making plans for the next year.

"In general, the year 2012 indicates that we have led the country on a trajectory of the managed, non-conflict development. The times, when the political struggle had a decisive effect on the economy and foreign policy, are in the past. This is also evidenced by the fact that the parliamentary campaign passed and in a civilized democratic format in all regions," he said.

Describing the outgoing year, he recalled the success of hosting Euro 2012 in the four Ukrainian cities and the acquisition of invaluable experience in the implementation of major infrastructure projects.

The President also reminded the launched reforms, including those aimed at deregulating the economy, etc.

The President reminded of the important beginning of work of the Constitutional Assembly, the initialing of the EU-Ukraine Association Agreement and the ratification of the Agreement on the establishment of a free trade area with the CIS countries.

Moreover, Yanukovych mentioned the parliamentary elections, noting that the Parliament of the seventh convocation should be more responsible than the previous Parliament was.
