The Agrarian Policy and Food Ministry of Ukraine plans to increase the area under wheat in 2013, farming agriculture department director Oleksandr Demidov informed.
"The grain area is to be increased. Thus, according to the State Statistics Service, 8.1 million hectares of Ukraine have been sown with winter crops, including 6.7 million hectares of wheat, 1.1 million hectares of barley, 304 million hectares of rye," Demidov said, the Ministry press service informed.
According to him, the state of winter grain crops is better than average performance over the past 10 years, which gives reason for their successful wintering and resuming spring vegetation. In addition, farmers expand the area under maize, which is becoming one of the major export crops. Moreover, the area under rapeseed will increase.
"Amounts of barley, buckwheat, sugar beets, soybeans, potatoes and vegetables are expected to be sawn at the level of 2012," Demidov said.
