1550 case of rabies have been registered in Ukraine since the year beginning, which is 470 cases more than last year, chairman of the state veterinary and phytosanitary service Volodymyr Gorzheyev told a press conference, ForUm correspondent reports.

The official specified that 135 rabies cases have been registered among cattle, 438 cases - among cats and 277 cases - among dogs. "The majority of cases have been registered among red foxes, which are the main source of the disease - 591 cases," he informed.

As Gorzheyev explain, such poor statistics is associated with poor immunization of wild carnivorous animal. "The main method of rabies prevention in Ukraine is oral immunization, meaning the vaccine is repeatedly distributed over certain areas from helicopter. We used to immunize 16 regions, but due to lack of financing the vaccination has been reduced to six regions only," he noted.

According to Gorzheyev, no cases of human rabies have been registered so far, though there have been 60 thousand animal bite cases registered for this period.
