Extreme snowfalls in Ukraine have become a record since 1881, Prime Minister Mykola Azarov has said during the Cabinet’s meeting, ForUm correspondent reports.

"Extreme snowfalls have been continuing in Ukraine for a few days. There are very difficult conditions for the transport and energy sectors. Snow mass brings down trees, power lines. According to our meteorologists, this is an absolute record for the entire period of meteorological research being conducted since 1881," Azarov said.

"Kyiv has had two month norm of precipitation for four days. Such a situation has occurred in Kyiv, Zhytomyr, Chernivtsi regions. As of the morning of today, 169 settlements in Kyiv region and 137 in Zhytomyr region remained without electricity," Azarov said.

He also noted that the power companies should cooperate with the local authorities as soon as possible to restore the supply of electricity.

"We need to mobilize all available forces," he added.
