Volgo Balt 199 cargo ship left Mariupol port on November 30 carrying coal to Antalya port. On December 4, the ship ran into a gale, cracked in two and almost immediately sank, Ukraine's Foreign Ministry spokesman Oleksandr Dykusarov said in a comment.
"The crew did not even have time to use survival gear. Four members of the crew, three Ukrainians and on Russian, jumped overboard and stayed in the water for 2-3 hours until were rescued by a salvage boat. The mariners are exhausted, but feel fine. The rescued crewmembers from Ukraine are staying now in a hotel and Ukrainian diplomats in Istanbul maintain constant contact with them," Dykusarov said.
According to the official, Ukrainians will come home in several days. The rescued sailors and a lost Ukrainian have been identified. Ukraine's Foreign Ministry has already contacted the relatives.
According to the General Consulate of Ukraine in Istanbul, the search and rescue operation lasted all night with the assistance of helicopters. Bad weather conditions did not enable the rescue team to use surface vessels.
