Ukraine was and will remain an independent state, the first President of Ukraine Leonid Kravchuk told a press conference, ForUm correspondent reports.

"I am convinced that Ukraine is, was and will be an independent state. There are no forces that can undermine the Ukrainian state," he said.

The first President noted that "despite the criticism of the current government, I want to tell everyone that all the steps and reforms taken to strengthen Ukraine are one of the ways for Ukraine to have a prospect as an independent state," Kravchuk said.

Kravchuk stressed that tomorrow, on December 1, Ukraine will mark the 21st National Referendum, when 34.700 thousand Ukrainian voters supported independence.

"This is 90.34% of citizens….. a very convincing figure ... It really was a celebration of democracy," the first president said.

Kravchuk believes that the first day of winter should be recognized as a Day of Democracy.
