Focusing on protection and security of patients brings Ukraine closer to European standards, Mykola Khobzey, director of the development and reforms of medical assistance department of healthcare Ministry of Ukraine, told the press conference within the First National Congress on patients' security, ForUm correspondent reports.

"Holding the First National Congress on patients' security we take first steps, which will bring us closer to the European standards and to the formation of civil society in Ukraine," he said.
According to the official, the healthcare system must focus on patient's security and solve his problems timely.

In her turn, Mohruba Gaffar-zede, head of the medical programs of Council of Europe department on human rights, also pointed out the importance of such congress. "Holding such event in Kyiv proves success not only at the national level, but at the international one as well," she said.

Viktor Serdiuk, president of the Patient's Rights and Security Council declared that their organization receives daily one or two calls from patients complaining about medical workers and doctors. He specified that in 20% of cases the complaints concern tragic events, including death.

The specialist also added that Ukraine should follow the example of Poland, which adopted last year a law on medical harm insurance.
