22 thousand new cases of HIV-positive status are disclosed every year in Ukraine, head of the State Service for Social Diseases Tetyana Alexandrina told a briefing in the Cabinet of Ministers, ForUm correspondent reports.

"We can say that the incidence is increasing, but the rate of increase is decreasing from year to year. According to the forecast, the incidence among risk groups will decrease in the near future," she said.

Medic also explained why number of AIDS cases is growing in Ukraine. According to her, "today, there is the incidence peak of patients infected 8-15 years ago".

Alexandrina also reported that the mortality rate increases annually, about 4500 people die from co-infection of HIV and tuberculosis every year.

"70% of all dying from AIDS died from HIV-TB. The reason for this is late identification of the problem, people were late to turn to doctors," she said.

Head of the State Service said that the number of patients receiving antiretroviral therapy has increased in 2012. 48 thousand patients will receive appropriate treatment before the yearend. According to her, the problem of providing children with relevant drugs has been solved – the Healthcare Ministry has purchased the necessary medicines worth over 9 million UAH and transferred to the corresponding institutions.
