Ukraine has to reduce purchases of the Russian gas under a price pressure and intend to buy 18 billion cubic meters in 2013, President Viktor Yanukovych said during a meeting with chairman of the Interfax international press centre Mykhaylo Komisar and executive director of news agency Interfax-Ukraine Oleksandr Martynenko.

Yanukovych noted that the partnership of Ukraine and Russia was different in the gas issue in different times, but it is a difficult period now, and both sides suffer damages.

The head of state added that if Ukraine has more price pressure, then Kyiv will be more interested in different sources of gas supply.

"If not, we will continue to reduce a volume of purchases and find more cost-effective alternative sources of gas supply," Yanukovych stressed.
