The Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine turned down a draft resolution amending the law of Ukraine on the national referendum.

As ForUm correspondent reports, 16 of the 276 MPs registered in the parliamentary session hall supported the proposal to cancel the law.

As reported, the MPs passed the law on the national forum on November 6, 2012.

According to the document, the national referendum can be called to approve a new wording of the Constitution, amendments to it, and cancellation or of the law amending the constitution.

Referendum can also be called to decide on the issues related to change of the territory of Ukraine.

According the law, the national referendum shall be initiated by the Ukrainian people and the Verkhovna Rada in cases and under the procedure foreseen by the constitution and laws.

 The nationwide referendum shall be appointed or declared by the President and the Parliament.

According to the law, the results of people's will expressed at the national referendum are binding.
