One of the reasons of high disease rate among Ukrainian men is poor care of health, chief urologist of Healthcare Ministry and urology department head of Bohomolets University Serhiy Pasechnyk told a press conference, ForUm correspondent reports.

"Following the demographic situation of Ukraine, male population is in the minority (54% - women, 46% - men). According to United Nations World Population Ageing Report, by 2047 old people will outnumber children on a global scale, which will lead to the increase of percentage of old men," he noted.

Pasechnyk also added that reduction of Ukraine's population and world tendency of population aging influence the health indicators of citizens. "Aging means increased spread of age-associated diseases. As for male population, the matter concerns benign prostatic hyperplasia. 30% of men over 46 have this disease with florid symptoms," the doctor informed.

According to him, the number of patients with this disease gradually increases with every passing year. Thus, in 2011, there were 1115 cases registered per 100 thousand of population, and the total number of such patients countrywide was 1.5 million. Every second patient with this pathology undergoes surgical treatment, Pasechnyk reported.

According to him, economic situation also influences health indicators, as such treatment is pretty expensive.
