As of today, there are one million 226 thousand diabetics in Ukraine, chief freelance endocrinologist of the Health Ministry of Ukraine Mykola Hulchiy told a press conference during the Ukrainian diabetes prevention week, ForUm correspondent reports.

According to him, 200 thousand people have diabetes of the first type, so they are insulin-dependent patients. 

According to deputy health minister Oleksandr Tolstanov, the prevalence of diabetes in Ukraine amounts to 2.8% of the total population. "And this figure is higher in Europe. For example, Germany has 10%, Sweden - 7% and France - 6%," the official informed.

According to him, Ukraine needs to establish a register of patients with diabetes in the near future and gradually introduce a practice of selling prescription insulin. "Then many questions regarding financing and insulin cost will disappear," Tolstanov summed up.
