It is necessary to amend the Constitution for the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine to determine the date for the re-elections in a number of constituencies, MP Taras Chornovil told ForUm.

Commenting on yesterday's decision of the CEC, he noted that "the position of the Central Election Commission is a so-called ostrich defense." The CEC has appealed to the parliament with request to announce new elections in single-mandate constituencies, what absolutely contradicts the current law," the MP said.

"Part 12 of the Article 96 of the law on elections states that the district election commission shall establish the election results in a single-mandate constituency, regardless of the number of polling stations at which the elections are recognized invalid," Chornovil said.

According to him, the parliament has nothing to do in this case, as "the Constitution does not stipulate that the Parliament shall establish some dates for some constituencies."

Chornovil also added that the elections may be appointed in the event of death or personal statement of the single-mandate deputy.
