Today, the world has an exacerbation of the global economic crisis, and the governments of many European countries have to cut budget spending on social programs and to reduce pensions and salaries. At the same time, Ukraine improves the situation of the most distressed segment of the people, President of Ukraine Viktor Yanukovych said on the occasion of the International Day against Poverty, the official website of the President reports.
Thus, according to the President, the extreme poverty rate in the country is the lowest since 2001, and the level of absolute poverty decreased from 16.8% in 2010 to 14.6% in 2011.
Starting from May of this year, the implementation of social initiatives has allowed to increase pensions by 120 hryvnia for 12.9 million retirees, resume compensation payments to depositors of the former USSR Savings Bank, start rising military pensions and increase support for low-income families.
The President is convinced that it is possible to provide every citizen with a decent standard of living by joining forces.
Annually, on October 17, the world public marks the International Day against Poverty.
