Secretary General of the Council of Europe Torbjorn Jagland welcomes the decision of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine to cancel defamation criminalizing.
"I welcome the decision to cancel the draft law criminalizing defamation. Defamation causes reasonable concern, but criminal penalties are the wrong answer," Secretary General of the Council of Europe said.
Jagland called on the Ukrainian authorities to dialogue with media organizations and political forces in order to find the civil remedies to provide adequate protection against defamation without "undue interference in the freedom of expression."
