Ukraine's integration into the European Union is a strategic goal for the government, Prime Minister of Ukraine Mykola Azarov said at the meeting with the head of the EU Delegation to Ukraine Ian Tombinski, the Cabinet’s press service informs.

"We are truly set to co-operation and the implementation of strategic documents between Ukraine and the European Union. This is particularly true of agreements on political association, free trade, visa-free travel. That is, the global documents on which we worked long enough and went to the serious compromises," Azarov said.

The Prime Minister added that the European Union is the important trading partner of Ukraine, with trade turnover of almost 30%. He also expressed the interest in the growth of trade. "This is the aim of a free trade area and all our efforts to implement a favorable trade climate between our two countries," Azarov said.

The Prime Minister also noted that Ukraine hopes for an infusion of European investments in the Ukrainian economy. According to him, to create a favorable climate in Ukraine, the government has taken a number of decisions related to deregulation, reducing the administrative burden on business, tax cuts, etc.

Azarov stressed the importance of continued cooperation between Ukraine and the International Monetary Fund under stand-by program, saying that the parties are negotiating to revise the IMF conditions to raise tariffs for the population, which, according to the Prime Minister, "will not withstand tariff racing," given high gas prices for Ukraine. The Prime Minister said that Ukraine is in talks with Russia to revise gas contract.

Ukraine also initiates the European Energy Conference. "We look forward to the active position of the European Union on this issue," the head of the government said.
