Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych has put the task to make the country energy independent in ten years, energy and coal industry minister of Ukraine Yuri Boiko said at the opening of the X International Forum "Fuel and Energy Complex of Ukraine: Present and Future", ForUm correspondent reports.

"Today's Forum is the next step in the implementation of this ambitious task. We have identified a number of priority areas, which will strengthen the energy security of Ukraine in the near future," he said.

According to him, the first area is increase in production of its own energy resources, while reducing their imports. "This is increase in production of natural gas, coal and other raw materials. Another trend is the replacement of natural gas with domestic thermal coal, implemented with the help of our foreign partners. We have already realized how profitable it is, as due to the growth of domestic coal consumption, the import of natural gas has been significantly reduced," the minister said.
Boiko added that another priority vector is the energy efficiency.

"In this area, we are implementing several programs in collaboration with partners from the EU and Russia," the minister concluded.
