PR member withdraws defamation bill
MP, member of the Party of Regions parliamentary faction Vitaly Zhuravsky registered a draft resolution on cancellation of the decision of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine to pass in the first reading the draft law of Ukraine on on increasing responsibility for denigration of the honor, dignity and professional reputation, ForUm learned from the Party of Regions press service.

"Having weighed every circumstance and taken into account the public interest, I have decided to withdraw my bill. I understand that on the eve of parliamentary election, any initiative is perceived with fear and mistrust," Zhuravsky said.

He emphasized that he hoped the Parliament would support this decision. According to the MP, he does not change his political position and considers the responsibility for defamation needs strengthening.

Zhuravsky recalled that recently he visited the meeting of the interagency working group "Open Talk", where he had the opportunity to discuss his initiative with media representatives.

"After the election, I will organize a series of round tables, which will be attended by journalists, human rights activists and scholars. After extensive discussion and working out the common vision for the future of the bill, I will present it to the Parliament," the politician said.
