"Today, Ukraine has already attained significant legislation, which meets the European approach to regional development. Important steps are the adoption of laws on the promotion of regional development, the state of regional development strategy till 2015, the law on the principles of domestic and foreign policy," he said.

The deputy minister noted that the adoption of these documents has allowed identifying the key problems, to introduce strategic planning of regional development, to determine its new incentives. "The first of them is the state support for the revival of depressed areas and the second is the development of regions on the basis of agreements between the Cabinet and the local authorities," he said.

However, the deputy minister continued, the global economic crisis has exacerbated the structural weaknesses of regional policy, witnessed the lack of adaptability of the region to challenges of our time, lack of effective management of regional development. "In this regard, I note that in international practice, government policy of regional development usually aims at reducing regional disparities, expanding of economic activity," Maksyuta said.
