Secretary General of the Council of Europe Thorbjørn Jagland calls on the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine to reject in the second reading the bill, criminalizing defamation, the Council of Europe press service informs.
"I call on the Ukrainian parliament to abandon the attempt to stifle freedom of the media, which is a necessary condition for the democracy functioning. Without a free press there is no remedy against the incompetence and abuse of power," he said.
According to Jagland, such a law may cause a negative impact on the media, particularly the increase in self-censorship in them, which would limit their freedom.
Secretary General believes that a more appropriate and suitable protection against defamation is a public dialogue and social protection.
