Lytvyn: Laws on elections in Ukraine not be changed for ten years

Electoral legislation should remain constant for at least ten years, chairman of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine said during a meeting with the pre-election mission of the Interim Committee of the PACE for Election Observation in Ukraine on October 28, 2012.

According to the press service of the Verkhovna Rada, Lytvyn expressed his view that the Parliament of the next convocation may accept the Electoral Code, which should not be amended for at least ten years.

The head of the Parliament reminded that the law on parliamentary elections by 366 votes adopted last year was a compromise solution. However, he noted that the mixed electoral system does not sufficiently promote political structuring of the society.

Among the disadvantages of the current electoral law, the Verkhovna Rada chairman called large-sized districts, which complicate the MP effective work with voters. He noted that the deputies elected by party lists hardly bear the responsibility to the voters.
