MPs want to introduce criminal liability for defamation. In the first reading, the Verkhovna Rada adopted a draft law on amendments to the Criminal Code and Criminal Procedure Code of Ukraine on increasing of responsibility for the attack upon honor, dignity and business reputation of people, ForUm correspondent reports.

244 MPs voted in favor of such decision.

Author of the bill, MP from the Party of Regions Vitaly Zhuravsky explained that these changes introduce the concept of "defamation" to the codes.

During the discussion, vice speaker of the Parliament Mykola Tomenko reminded that the concept of "defamation" was decriminalized in Ukraine 11 years ago. According to him, if such rule comes into force, there will be a risk that "third of journalists will be in prison."
