The United Nations General Assembly is the main forum of the world organization representing 193 countries will open today the 67th session to consider 168 issues on the agenda, concerning international security, peacekeeping, combating terrorism and drug trafficking, return of lost cultural property.

Former Serbian foreign minister Vuk Jeremic will be the chairman of the UN General Assembly 67th session.

On September 25 - 29, the UN General Assembly will hold political debate involving the heads of state and government, foreign ministers of various countries.
One of the main topics of the session will be the situation in the Middle East, particularly in Syria.
At the current session may be considered an application for United Nations membership filed by the Palestinians. The meetings of the "quartet" on the Middle East (Russia, EU, U.S. and UN), as well as on Iran’s nuclear problem (Russia, USA, China, France, UK, Germany) will be held.
The agenda also includes the issues of Afghanistan, the need for lifting the U.S. blockade of Cuba, the role of diamonds in fueling conflicts, the situation in conflict zones in Africa - Somalia, Sudan, Mali.

UN reform and its financial position will also be discussed during the General Assembly sessions, including the problem of the financing peacekeeping operations in different parts of the world.
The UN General Assembly, established in 1945, acts as the chief deliberative, policymaking and representative organ of the world body.
