European Commissioner for Enlargement and European Neighbourhood Policy Stefan Füle, Swedish foreign minister Carl Bildt and the chairman of the European Parliament Foreign Affairs Committee Elmar Brok said President Viktor Yanukovych that the legitimacy of a future Ukraine’s Parliament will depend on the progress of the election.

"The legitimacy of the new parliament will depend on the election, which must be free and fair, in accordance with the highest international standards. In this context, we emphasize the importance of media freedom," the joint statement says.

During the meeting, representatives of the European Union also stressed that there should be no room for a pause in relations between Ukraine and the EU, as well as room for compromise on the issue of values.

In addition, the EU representatives expressed the need to resolve the issue of selective justice to advance to a new level of relationship defined in the Association Agreement.

"We regret that the effects of the current situation does not allow two possible opposition leaders to take part in the parliamentary election as a result of trials that did not meet international standards of fairness, transparency and independence of the judicial process,"  joint statement says.
