Ukraine applied for the purchase of Russian gas in 2013 in the amount of 24.5 billion cubic meters, energy and coal industry minister of Ukraine Yuri Boiko said.

"We sent them (Russia. - Ed.) request within the time specified in the requirements of the contract, by the end of July. We build our plans on the basis of that request, which was sent - it is 24.5 billion cubic meters," he told journalists in Kyiv on Thursday.

Boiko said that this year Ukraine applied for the purchase of 27 billion cubic meters of gas.

Earlier, the government in the prospectus on Ukrainian Eurobonds, released in late August of this year, reported that on February 7, 2012 the Naftogaz sent to the Gazprom the annex to the contract for the supply of gas to Ukraine, which is supposed to reduce the amount delivered in the current year to 27 billion cubic meters. The decline in imports may be partly offset by the gas extraction from the underground storage facilities.

The Naftogaz Ukraine has been importing Russian natural gas under contract with OAO Gazprom since 19 January 2009. At the same time, Ukraine is not satisfied with the previously signed agreement. Ukraine has been unsuccessfully sought for review of pricing arrangements. In this regard, the Ukrainian state holding intends to reduce purchases of Russian energy resource because of its high cost.

The lower volume of gas, purchased by the Ukrainian state holdings, than the volume provided for in the current contract with the Gazprom (52 billion cubic meters per year), and even the lower one than take-or-pay commitments, is a matter of debates between the Gazprom and the Naftogaz of Ukraine.
