Deputies of the Beregovo city council (Transcarpathian region) has decided to grant the Hungarian language with the status of the regional language on the city territory, the city mayor István Gaydosh said.

"At the session of the city council 26 out of 36 deputies voted for Hugnrrian as the regional language," Gaydosh announced.

According to him, apart from the state Ukrainian language, blanks, stamps and seals of the Beregov city council will be issued in Hungarian.

"From now on, street signs, outside ads and sign plates will be written in two languages. Knowledge of both languages will be taken into account for hiring state and local-government officials," the mayor added.

The city population numbers 25.5 thousand people, including 12.8 thousand Hungarians.
